National Museum Jamaica, a division of the Institute of Jamaica, has a collection of over 30,000 artefacts that showcase 2000 years of Jamaica's material heritage from the time of the Taino, the first Jamaicans, up to today. Our online database will give you access to many of these artefacts and is ideal for students, teachers, researchers and anyone who wants to learn more about Jamaica's history through artefacts.

The oldest artefacts in our collection that reflect the socio-economic and political characteristics of the Taino, Jamaica’s first people.

One of the largest collection of artefacts of African origin in the Americas. This ethnographic collection reflects the social, economic and political life of West and East African societies.

Slavery Collection

This collection primarily recovered from underwater archaeological excavations, represents the fascinating history of Port Royal, "once known as the wickedest city in the world", before and after the devastating earthquake in 1692.

Artefacts related to the experiences of enslaved Africans, from the journey from West Africa to life on plantations in the Caribbean and the fight for freedom.

This database is a growing repository of artefacts from our National Collection and there are many ways to search this database some of which are outlined below.

Keyword Search allows you to perform a general search across multiple fields for any catalog records online; and Advanced Search which can help you be more specific with your search. You can search for a word or phrase within a particular search category or use multiple categories to further narrow down your search results.
