Description |
A wrist shackle made from iron composed of two cuffs joined by two circular hoops with a central clasp. This type of shackle was commonly used by British slave traders and plantation owners to restrain the wrists of the enslaved Africans from the time of capture in Africa, through the Middle Passage, during auctioning and when being punished. Shackles prevented the enslaved Africans from escaping capture and many of them were manufactured in factories in Britain and then imported by her colonies to be used in the slave trade. |
