Description |
This is a masked figure that is part of the traditions of the Dan/Yakuba peoples of Western Ivory Coast. Gle Gben on stilts nearly three meters, performs the most daring stunts-spinning upside down, balancing on roofs of huts, twisting and gesticulating while screeching and howling. The masquerade is accompanied by other actors, drums and bells. Although, the masquerade is more of a source of entertainment today, the Gle Gben is still observed as a secret masking tradition and the Guere Masquerade is held to 'run duppy' or evil spirits out of town. |
