Description |
Large, heavy, cylindrical, cream coloured ceramic container with a star in mid-section. Two decorative handles (opposite sides) with linear designs on them. Linear designs near base, rim and on middle section, around body. Circular designs near flat rim. Circular opening at base (like a spout). "Slack & Brownlow. Canning Works. Manchester. Established 1830. Compressed Charcoal Filter" , along with a star embossed on body of filter. Water filter made from stoneware and compressed charcoal was used to purify drinking water. These type of water filter first appeared in 1879 and were manufactured by Slack & Brownlow Canning Works in Manchester, England. |
