Description |
Large cylindrical mug with scalloped ends. Glazed with pink rim and base. Entire body is decorated with sceneries. On one side is a female, a male and two children. The female is holding her hand over her face as if crying. The words printed below image "Sailors' Farewell. Sweet oh sweet is that sensation. Where two hearts in union meet. But the pain of separation. Mingles bitter with the sweet". A caravel can be seen on the sea in the background and trees and foliage also. On the other side of mug is a female sitting holding a book in one hand and a flag in the other. She is surrounded by trees and tools on the ground. This mug is an example of lustreware, a type of pottery decorated with an iridescent metallic glaze which were produced by Anthony Scott’s Pottery in Southwick and Dawson’s Pottery in Low Ford, or at Dixon, Austin & Co.
