These restraints were clamped around wrists and ankles of the enslaved African from the time of capture in Africa, through the Middle Passage, during auctioning and on the plantation. This was a way of preventing the enslaved Africans from escaping capture and to punish rebellious slaves. The majority of shackles were manufactured in factories in Britain and then imported by her colonies to be used in the slave trade. |
