Description |
Dark colour earthenware, boat shaped bowl with two raised handles, which has linear incisions on top. The pottery designs from Jamaica's pre-Colombian period have been continuously described as 'simple' in comparison with Taino ceramics from the other islands of the Greater Antilles. The Taino used the coiling technique in which they placed rolls of clay one on top of the other. After the vessel was smoothed and polished, a slip was sometimes applied. This slip was to produce a perfect finish, or to include the colours such as red and white. Taino decoration varied from simple incisions to animal and human motifs. The typical Taino pottery varied in designs, however they had two basic styles: oval and circular.Their vessels were made for three main purposes: Domestic - used for cooking and eating. Ceremonial - used in the Cohoba ceremony and other rituals. Burials - urns for skeletal remains and pots buried with the dead. |
