Description |
Before the invention of indoor toilets, chamber pots were the main ways people disposed of their bodily wastes. They have been around for thousands of years and came in many forms but were more commonly a pot. This delftware chamber pot originated in the 1500's, in Lambeth and Staffordshire, England. The wealthy had chamber pots made from gold and silver but the most common materials were earthenware, stoneware, and delftware. Chamber pots were squat jugs with a wide rim, they had lids to keep the odour from escaping from the pot and some were fitted into a chair with a special hinged seat called a close stool. |
