Description |
This type of water filtration system composed of quarried limestone carved into a funnel shape originated in Australia in the 19th century. It was believed that limestone was ideal for purifying water because its porosity allowed for water to percolate through it. However the pores could not filter microscopic bio-organisms and and was a breeding ground for harmful bio-organisms that caused diseases such as typhoid. This type of filters were replaced by porcelain filters until piped water started to be chlorinated |
