Description |
Object with an irregular triangular shape. Handle attached at top is almost triangular in shape. On top area of iron are two raised letters "L" and another resembling "M". Flat, smooth base. Since the late Middle Ages metal irons called sad iron were heated by a fire or on a stove to smooth and remove wrinkles from clothing. Sad irons were also called flat irons or smoothing irons. Metal handles had to be gripped with a pad or thick rag to avoid getting burnt by the hot handle. The sad in sad iron (or sadiron) is an Old English word for solid, and in some contexts this name suggests something bigger and heavier than a flat iron. |
