Description |
Nebmeroutef and Thoth, 1391-1353 B.C. The statuette shows a high-ranking scribe at work, reading an unrolled papyrus. He is under the protection of the god Thoth, patron of the scribes, represented in his animal form as a baboon. The inscriptions identify him as Nebmeroutef, known to have been an important figure at the time of Amenophis III. This artefact was gifted to the Institute of Jamaica from the estate of Sir Robert Monde, industrial chemist and archaeologist who financed and worked at archaeological excavations in Egypt. One of his colleagues was Sir Howard Carter, co-discoverer of the famous tomb of Tutankhamun in 1926. |
