Description |
The print depicts a landscape scene of trees, mountains and a river. In the foreground a bridge is over a river and two men and a woman are transporting sugar cane across the bridge with their donkey. Below the bridge there are two men, resting on the bank of the turbulent river,one of the men have a basket resting on the top of his head while the other is sitting. In the background, buildings and hills are visible as well as people who look like they are admiring the sugar plantation. Printed below image on the left side, "Drawn on the spot & painted by George Robertson". In the centre below the title "Dedicated to William Beckford Esq. of Somerley in Suffolk. By his most Obliged Servant. Published March 25th 1778 by John Boydell. Engraved in Cheapside London. John Boydell". On the right, "Engraved by Thomas Vivares". A coat of arm is visible in the centre below the image. |
