Description |
Female figure kneeling and with hands clasped in front is an example of an edan ogboni staff, which were given to new members of the Ogboni society of Yoruba. The Ogboni society was comprised of male and female elders who served as judges and oversee the selection and installation of kings. The edan ogboni represent the founding couple of the community, the power of the Ogboni society and the need for male-female cooperation. The statues are usually worn around the neck because it is believed to be a source of wisdom and judgement. |
