Description |
One gallon baluster shaped liquid measure with lidded thumbpiece in a hammerhead shape and handle. Baluster shaped measures were used to dispense liquids, grains, medicine and even shellfish from the 15th century. They came in different sizes based on the volume of liquid they could hold, the measurement would be written on the bottom of the container from ¼ gill up to a gallon. They were used until the introduction of Imperial standard measures in 1826. The typical 17th century baluster measure was, lidded with a thumbpiece in a hammerhead shape and this one was recovered from Port Royal. |
