Description |
Spade with a metal and wooden grip, while the handle and bowl is metal. "Elwell. Stainless" inscribed at top left hand corner. Inscribed on the face are the words "Spade used at the Ground Breaking Ceremony of the National Stadium. Briggs Park 5th Jan., 1961. By The Hon. Dr. Glendon L. Logan Minister of Housing and Social Welfare. The Hon. Norman W. Manley M.M., Q.C., Premier of Jamaica. Jesse Owens ESQ., 1936 U.S. Olympic Champion. Sir Kenneth Blackburne K.C.M.G., O.B.E., Governor of Jamaica. Herbert G. MacDonald ESQ., O.B.E., President W.I. Olympic Assn., Chairman National Sports Ltd." It was at this stadium that the National Flag was raised on August 6th, 1962 and Independence celebrated. Inscribed on the the silver section of the handle the words "This Shovel was also used at the Ground Breaking Ceremony of West Indies Pulp & Paper Ltd. on November 19TH 1969 at Freetown, Clarendon By the RT. Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer, P.C., M.P. Prime Minister of Jamaica". |
