Description |
Zemi carved from sandstone with anthropomorphic features. A magical tear can be seen below eye region. This zemi was as also a pestle used in religious ceremonies. The Zemi was an important feature in the Taino religion. They were made from wood, stone, coral and even cotton. Most zemis represented human forms, plants and animals. The zemi was not just an idol, it was a spirit that was worshipped daily. In the Taino society zemis were highly regarded, because it was believed that they had universal powers. Also, they thought that the powers were given to the persons who owned these zemis. |
